A Vision for Giving Back
The Beirne Carter Foundation was established in 1986 by Beirne Blair Carter, founder and former Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Carter Machinery. Mr. Carter believed strongly in supporting organizations and initiatives that created meaningful, lasting impact in their communities.
He often shared a personal philosophy that “the last third of one’s life should be focused on giving back” — a belief that became the foundation of his philanthropic legacy.
Early Life & Service
Born in Richmond, Mr. Carter attended St. Christopher's School and later Virginia Military Institute before serving in the United States Army during World War II.
During his service, he was wounded in action in Aachen, Germany, and received the Purple Heart. Following the war, he graduated from the University of Virginia McIntire School of Commerce in 1948.
Building Carter Machinery
In 1952, Mr. Carter founded Carter Machinery in Roanoke, Virginia. Under his leadership, the company grew into one of the nation’s most successful Caterpillar dealerships.
Known for his innovative thinking, leadership, and commitment to people, Mr. Carter believed strongly in education, hard work, and investing in future generations.
A Legacy of Philanthropy
Mr. Carter supported a wide range of charitable causes throughout Virginia, including healthcare, education, youth development, historic preservation, environmental initiatives, and community welfare.
He was known not only for transformational gifts, but also for quietly helping organizations and individuals in moments of need. His giving reflected both generosity and a deep belief in strengthening communities for the long term.
Advancing Medical Research
Among Mr. Carter’s most significant contributions was the establishment of the Beirne B. Carter Center for Immunology Research at the University of Virginia.
Founded through an initial $3.5 million gift while Mr. Carter himself was undergoing cancer treatment, the Center was built on his vision that research could lead to breakthroughs in diagnosing and treating human diseases. Today, the Center continues to support groundbreaking work in immunology and biomedical research.
Commitment to Education & Community
Mr. Carter also made transformational contributions to organizations including North Cross School, where his support helped establish the Carter Athletic Center and expand opportunities for students. He served on the school’s Board of Trustees for 25 years and was remembered for his humility, leadership, and belief in the importance of education.
Continuing the Legacy
Before his passing in 1989, Mr. Carter expressed his desire for the Foundation to continue enriching lives across Virginia for generations to come. Today, the Beirne Carter Foundation proudly carries forward that vision by supporting organizations and initiatives that strengthen communities and improve lives throughout the Commonwealth.
